I believe that an educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our democracy. Although this idea is not original to me, it is a central tenet to why I teach. My appreciation for the role of education in America is borne out of my own experience. I am the product of an excellent public school and university education. Unquestionably my quality of life has been shaped in large measure because of my strong education. I was instilled with the notion that an education is the most valuable asset a person can have and that it cannot be taken away from you. As a student of history, I note that the remarkable progress of African Americans in this country is due in large measure to the power of education. I was drawn to a career in teaching because I believe that education plays a key role in creating the nation and the world we seek.
